I'm a spy; a spook; a spectre; a ghost. I work for the UK Secret Intelligence Service, also known as UKSIS or MI-6.
Nice to meet you.
So, there I was, quietly minding my own business in the bowels of the UKSIS building on the banks of the Thames, when my boss summons me to his office:
“Superficially, you will be the Service’s generous contribution to HMG’s part in something called the Iraq Survey Group or ISG. This is a multinational, multi-agency Task Force being set up by the Americans to systematically hunt for Weapons of Mass Destruction. We know, of course, there are no such weapons to be found, do we not?” he says.
Huh? We do?? I missed that memo!
Next thing you know, I'm staring at dead bodies in a ratty villa in the stifling heat of Iraqi summer, although it's so hot I think maybe the RAF dropped me off in Hell by mistake.
To be fair, the weapons might not be here, but there are still plenty of scientists capable of building these awful things. So I'm supposed to find a dozen of the best – or worst if you like – and offer them a way out that doesn’t include terrorism or the Axis of Evil.
This seems like a pretty important job to me, but for some reason I’m alone and off the books, without backup or support. Thanks a lot!
Just to make it even harder, these eggheads don’t want to be found and I’m barely one step ahead of a CIA hit-squad intent on erasing them permanently.
All this while surrounded by unexploded ordnance, IEDs, insurgents, political mayhem, and angry locals.
A quiet day at the office then.
I am thoroughly enjoying the our book. I am very tempted to read the whole thing all at once, but I find I enjoy much more if I read portions, then have time to think about them before I move onto the next.
The description of your feelings in Part 1: 'who am I', 'where am I?' and 'WTF am i doing here?' during your 'isolation' after being possibly exposed was brilliant. I remember as I was reading it, I sort of heard a Jackson Browne song in my head! "No matter where I run, I can never seem to get away from me'......"
An interesting and compelling read into the back story leading to the invasion and the day to day reality of living within a combat zone. It brings back many fond memories of my time in Camp Slayer. This book just covers a very brief part of some of what TFS got up to so I'm very much hoping for a follow on book. Highly recommended.
A fascinating insight into the secret world behind one of the worlds biggest cover ups. A compelling read, fantastic lead characters and gritty realism that bursts the mystique of the British Secret Service. A cliché but couldn't put it down. Really looking forward to the next installment.
A page-turner! From the moment I started reading, I was pulled in and completely captivated. Erikson's vivid descriptions and meticulous research brought the historical setting to life. I felt like I was right there with Harry Smith, experiencing every twist and turn of the plot as the intensity was building.
Erikson does a great job of bringing the reader into Smith's internal turmoil as he tries to find a path forward to survival and perhaps accomplish his government's dubious mission. I found myself staying up late into the night, unable to put the book down.
Reading Will Erikson's work of fiction I can't help but feel the author's pain as I read the words and feel ....he is a man of empathy and compassion. So full of knowledge of the truth
The tension and danger in Iraq feel very real, as does the angst and introspection of Smith as he tries to work out how he can do some good amongst all the bad.
Found has taken many, many years to complete, not least of all because it's actually the first installment of (at least) three works. So, if you like this one, there's a lot more to come!
I grew up in rural Gloucestershire, on the edge of the picturesque Cotswolds. I studied, joined the army, then the security service. I have wandered the world, looking for...something
I read A LOT and there are many, many great authors that I admire and recommend without any hesitation. They have inspired me immensely, with writing or subject matter that 'spoke' to me. Some of my favourites include Nelson DeMille, Mick Herron, Colin Dexter, Stephen King, Craig Thomas, Dennis Lehane, Nick Hornby, Douglas Adams, Lawrence Block, Michael Connolly, and Tom Clancy.
I'll use this section to explain a little about the odd little Universe that created Harry Smith and his adventures.
You can send me a message or ask me a general question using this form.
I will do my best to get back to you soon!
